Well the day finally came. After losing our cars in May, we finally have a new car! This one of course is setup to be flat towed from day one! It felt like forever waiting for the car to come in. We had three rentals over the time we have been without a car. Rental number one, rewind back to Charleston when this one week tour began. Then rental two here in NC until the insurance coverage stopped. Finally rental three that started in July, which came from the local airport (Asheville). But all of that was over, this past Thursday because we got our NEW CAR!
I am sure you are thinking, you need a car so why new, why not used that we could get faster. Well the market reality was, for a few thousand more (not many) we could buy new as opposed to paying over inflated pricing on used vehicles. It made sense to get something that would have a warranty to cover at minimum the time we believe we will be without a house, since it is our only car now (thankfully we did). Which brings up a whole other thought/anxiety point. Unless we had a trailer to do so, we can’t tow two vehicles at the same time. So we had to decide if a single car would be enough. And then, what do we need from that vehicle in terms of functionality and storage/cargo room. Since we are towing the car, it also becomes additional storage for us. Since we plan on our folding bikes being in the tow car, we needed something with a fair amount of cargo space.
Okay back to reality… Got the car Thursday! WOOHOO! Went out for lunch Friday, had to pickup a few things from the local Amazon locker and the Pack and Post. We were headed to Subway for a quick lunch stop and it happens… yeah, car shuts off. We were both horrified, but maybe we did something. It becomes obvious we didn’t do anything wrong very quickly. As I pressed the start button again and the car started to vibrate it was clear there was something else wrong (like no power). So here we are in our car, in the middle of the busiest intersection here in the middle of nowhere and our car won’t start. For the first ten or twenty seconds, not even the blinkers would come on. Then there was the quick realization that we knew nothing of this car. We couldn’t tell if the car was in park, or still in gear. We had no idea where the battery is to jump it. We also had no idea why the car would shut down at an intersection. Yes, less than 24 hours after buying it, we had the car towed. Complete with pictures and video of it going on the rollback, and then it begins…
Until the next time, be safe out there!
